In Canada, the governing body for standardized point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) education is CPoCUS (https://cpocus.ca/). Over the years, several courses and curricula were created to better individualize PoCUS learning for target milieus of practice. Please visit their website to learn more.

Per CPoCUS guidelines, an introductory course is one that fulfills the following criteria: content covering both lectures and scanning time, length of 8 hours, and issuance of a certificate of completion at the end.

The goal of an introductory course is to cover a few of the basic PoCUS topics, i.e. knobology, pneumothorax, pleural effusion, subxiphoid cardiac view, aorta, abdomen, and first-trimester obstetrics.

For those wishing to pursue a standardized PoCUS certification, such as the IP certification, an introductory course is a mandatory starting point.

IP stands for Independent Practitioner. This is the standardized certification across Canada that confirms that you are an adequately skilled PoCUS practitioner. This certification also gives you the necessary credentials to teach, examine and certify others in the future.

After receiving a certificate attesting to the completion of a CPoCUS introductory course, IP candidates may obtain CPoCUS membership and start logging scans. Scans must be observed by a certified IP. Once scan requirements are completed, IP candidates may proceed to take the examination (administered based on CPoCUS requirements by a certified IP). Once examination is successfully completed, IP certification may be obtained.

MTL SONO is a CPoCUS-recognized introductory course, with a structure that aims to take PoCUS education a step further by putting forth an improved curriculum/format each year, while maintaining excellence in teaching. As well, organized by a group of McGill medical students, this is a fully non-profit initiative aiming to make PoCUS education more financially accessible to trainees (medical students and residents).
